Figures released recently show that 49%* of UK adults are not currently making enough provision for their retirement. The problem for most people is not that they plan to fail but that they simply fail to plan.

The good news is that 80%* are actually saving towards retirement, but obviously a large proportion of those diligent savers have lost sight of their target or they didn’t establish one in the first place. So is it any wonder that only 51%* of people are putting enough away each month.

It seems that every time you turn on the TV news or open a newspaper these days redundancies are in the headlines. Even the armed forces aren’t immune and we are currently engaged in military action around the world.

In our own region just today (05/04/2011) it has been announced that Premier waste who have operations in throughout the North East including Durham, Washington, Gateshead and South Tyneside has transferred half its staff to a rival company and placed the rest in to a consultation process which seems likely to result in at least some redundancies.

When you engage the services of an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) you may receive two different types of service, transactional or holistic, in years gone by you probably would’t even be given the choice odds were that the adviser you were dealing with probably only offered one kind of service and that's what you received. If you have seen an IFA in the past, do you know what type of service you received?

David and Michelle lead a comfortable lifestyle on their middle income salaries, they both drive nice modern cars, and they holiday abroad almost every year and enjoy social nights out with their wide network of friends. They live in a nice modern house on a nice housing development and like many couples of their age they have focussed on their mortgage as their number one priority and have put retirement savings on the back burner until they were more comfortable. But now as they near their forties they are beginning to realise that they have some catching up to do on the saving for retirement front.  Now obviously David and Michelle are just fictional characters but I dare say that we all know people like them we only have to look out the window or maybe even in the mirror!
